Student Job Fair at Bethany College Tomorrow
Written on March 25th, 2009 | 0 CommentsQuick update – Karri Mulhern will be up in Brooke County at Bethany College’s student job fair tomorrow, Thursday, March 26th from 11AM – 2PM to discuss work opportunities in the Ohio Valley. She continues to meet with businesses about their workforce needs regularly, including several meetings today, so she’s probably a better source of information on Ohio Valley jobs than anyone else around.
While that WV career fair’s just for Bethany students, here’s another reminder about the WV career fair at Wheeling Jesuit University next week. Good luck in your career search!
Ohio Valley Job Fair coming to Wheeling, WV March 31
Written on March 23rd, 2009 | 0 CommentsLast year the Regional Economic Development Partnership – or RED as we like to call them – put on two separate job fairs at Wheeling Island, drawing thousands of job seekers. In conjunction with the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce, the first job fair is set for 2009.
The Ohio Valley: Epicenter of the New Ottoman Empire?
Written on January 18th, 2009 | 0 CommentsLast year a group of five Palestinian journalists made Wheeling, WV one of their few stops in a cross country trip. I was pleased to be invited to the meeting at Oglebay Resort along with Juliet Terry of A Vision Shared and Don Rigby of RED.
Late last week a contingent of local leaders met at RED’s headquarters to meet with representatives from the United States Commercial Service about potential business opportunities in Turkey. In case you hadn’t figured it out yet, this ain’t your daddy’s Wheeling anymore.
Wheeling Remains a Top U.S. “Most Secure” City
Written on January 4th, 2009 | 0 CommentsSaw a publication today telling the rest of the country what our residents and former residents already know about Wheeling, WV (and the surrounding Ohio Valley): Wheeling is one of the safest small cities in the United States.
Farmers Insurance recently released their Most Secure U.S. Places to Live list. Wheeling, WV – The Friendly City – ranks 11th among small towns (metro areas under 150,000 residents) in their most recent list. The study looks at factors such as crime statistics, extreme weather / natural disasters, housing & job loss figures, air quality, and life expectancy.
So, no surprise to see Wheeling, but it’s still good to see the national recognition.
On a separate note, sorry for the long delay in posts – I doubt we’ll ever get to multi-day postings, but we should be able to get some news out more regularly – at least monthly if not biweekly.
Happy New Year!

First Modern US Coal to Liquid (CTL) Plant Announced for Benwood, WV
Written on July 28th, 2008 | 4 CommentsSome pretty exciting news from our partner on the Ohio Valley careers Web site. The Regional Economic Development Partnership (RED) today announced some pretty big news.
The nation’s first coal-to-liquid (CTL) plant will be constructed here in the Ohio Valley in Marshall County at Benwood, WV. It’s a joint effort between CONSOL Energy and Synthesis Energy Systems (SES). It’s expected to mean 300-500 construction jobs for Ohio Valley residents. After the ctl plant is built, it should mean 60 full time hires for its operation. Here’s an excerpt from the official announcement:

Take Off Your Hat – How to Dress for a Job Fair or Interview
Written on July 12th, 2008 | 0 CommentsI’ve been debating about whether or not to write this post, but I think it’s important to get the information out there since so many people are hurting their chances of finding employment and maybe have never heard this before. Dress up!
At the risk of embarrassing some – not all, but some – people I saw at the Ohio Valley Job Fair on Wheeling island earlier this week – it is not appropriate to wear hats or jerseys or be scantily clad. You wouldn’t wear the same outfit to a Steelers game that you would to a funeral (unless the deceased were this guy). So don’t wear what you would hanging out with your friends to meet with prospective employers.
Census Figures Released: The Good and Bad News Report
Written on July 11th, 2008 | 1 CommentPapers across the country were busy publishing the latest census figures yesterday for their local cities and towns. Virtually everywhere in our local area including Wheeling, WV; Pittsburgh, PA; Weirton, WV; Steubenville, OH; St. Clairsville, OH and Martins Ferry, OH. The only one to pick up population? Scion, OH…from 761 to 763.
Frankly the results, while not what we would hope for aren’t very surprising for number junkies (hat tip to Dominick Cerrone of Good Mansion Wines for sending over a breakdown). We have a great number of people in the upper brackets of the age range. Simply put, deaths are going to outpace births for some time barring some major fortuitous event.
But there’s good news in the longer term picture if you really look at the numbers.
Is this Site Just for Young Folks?
Written on July 8th, 2008 | 0 CommentsI manned a booth for a little while today at the Job Fair at Wheeling Island and will be stopping by a bit later to continue to expose our new Ohio Valley careers Web site to local job seekers. As I said before, the site is not just for people outside our area, but current West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania residents looking for jobs, too.
Today has been interesting for a number of reasons. I appreciate everyone that stopped by the booth and the kind words from employers and job seekers alike about how easy our site is to use.
One woman mentioned that when she heard me on WKKX originally, she thought that the site was just for young people, but she gave it a look anyway. She felt it was just as valuable for folks in her age range (over 40) as it was for young professionals. And that a senior work force is valuable for the Ohio Valley as well.
