Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is part of the Pittsburgh DMA. As of 2000, the population was 40,672.

Greene County was created on February 9, 1796 from part of Washington County and named for General Nathanael Greene.

Its county seat is Waynesburg.

Greene County Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 40,672 people, 15,060 households, and 10,587 families residing in the county. The population density was 71 people per square mile (27/km²). There were 16,678 housing units at an average density of 29 per square mile (11/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.07% White, 3.90% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 18.2% were of German, 13.8% American, 12.9% English, 12.4% Irish, 8.2% Italian and 6.7% Polish ancestry according to Census 2000.

There were 15,060 households out of which 30.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.40% were married couples living together, 10.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% were non-families. 25.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the county, the population was spread out with 22.10% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 106.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 106.50 males.

Every year on July 29th, Waynesburg has a unique festival called Rain Day. This festival occurs because on July 29th, it almost always rains in Waynesburg Borough. This celebration dates back for over 50 years and records show that it has been happening since the 1800s.

Waynesburg is home to Waynesburg University and to Greene County Airport (which includes a 3500 foot paved/lighted runway with lights operating continuously from sunset to sunrise daily).
